Where to see art in Brazzaville
Art centres, galleries, painting schools and craft markets: where to watch makers at work and look at real pieces, often without an appointment.
Looking at work on a screen is not the same as standing in front of it. Several places in Brazzaville can be visited, some without an appointment, and you are more likely to meet someone working than to find a closed shopfront.
Art centres and schools
An art centre is not a gallery: you find studios, residencies, sometimes classes, and work at different stages. It is often the best place to understand how a piece is made, and to meet someone.
Painting schools play the same role. Congolese painting was passed on partly through them, and some are still going.
Galleries
Galleries show finished work, hung, and give you a sense of local prices. Two useful reflexes: ask whether the artist is living and reachable, and ask whether the gallery takes a commission. Both change what you pay and what the maker receives.
Craft markets
You will find basketry, pottery, leatherwork, masks and carved objects. Quality varies enormously, and the same object may be handmade or an imported item being resold. The question is always the same: who made this, and can I speak to them?
Before you go
Opening hours change often and temporary shows are not always announced online. Call ahead. And if you are coming for one particular maker, write to them: most are happy to receive visitors at the studio, which beats any shopfront.
The list we keep
We keep a list of these places, with what you find there, the city and contact details where they are public. It sits on the Places page, and the agenda flags what is coming up.
